5. Your final reflections on the course

Personally the most interesting thing I’ve learned in this course is how politicians work in large numbers. It was interesting how deep a campaign is and how they work through each candidate. Although each candidate is intelligence in their own right, it is truely a team effort to make a successful president. Media gets more credit than I expected because they play important roles in politics and keep candidates on a straight line when addressing the people. I respect media and politics more than I did before this course.

4. How will the media play a vital role in the 2012 elections and subsequent elections?

The media is already playing a vital role in the 2012 elections. For example look at Herman Cain; he has chosen to drop out of the elections due to the allegations that have been spread nationwide about his sexual harassment. Media is already attacking candidates and keeping the viewers entertained. Each candidate needs to keep their information straight and stay on their toes. I think next generations may learn how the media works time over time and use this source as a strategy to impact competitors. Media can either make a positive impact or negative impact, and next generations may see a benefit to how the media works with politics.

3. Cable news - please give a final analysis of your thoughts on the influence of cable news - what ever happened to fair and unbiased reporting?

I do not think fair and unbiased reporting ever existed honestly. As long as there is freedom of speech, there will be an opinion shared. I feel that Cable news is another tool used to deliver information to an audience with an agenda. The difference on how we accept information from industries such as cable news is to know that there is always an agenda and that we can look for the current events without allowing the agenda influence our opinion. If people learn how to utilize more than source of media, then will have better quality with the decisions and opinions we develop about every day media. Therefore courses such as PAF 494 does arm up with the necessary knowledge to use media to our advantage.

2. Twitter: Choose 6 relevant "Tweets" you've seen on Twitter related to this class.

1) This twitter is being used as a Social Media tool to support the Obama campaign for 2012 eclections.

3) John Stewart was recently called out by Fox News for being as liberal as they were conservative. I believe this twitter supports Fox news views about Stwart.

Final: Three political blogs

AZ central Blog

This site is really simple and easy to comprehend. I like how every topic has a picture of the reporter and how each blog is short and to the point. This site provides you with hyper link to leave comments, report violations, and related topics. Overall I like the political blog website because it covers information from both the state and national level. There are topics about medical marijuana, the state’s Medicaid program, and state sales tax. These are types of information that I am interested in. However I notice that most of the topics are covered by republican reporters such as; Mary Jo Pitzl, Mary K. Beinhart, and Ginger Rough, which tells this site is partially bias from a conservative perspective.

Article: I notice these blogs are state base information. However this site does provide details about the recent state elections going on between Kirk Adams, Russell Peirce, Matt Salman, and Jerry Lewis. Supposedly it was a close race in the Arizona State Elections. I am not much on state government but it is good to know that we can get similar statistics from a blog site such as AZ central.

Huffington Post

This website is a very user friendly website. From my observation and research, this website is appealing to many followers who leave reactions and comments in large numbers. The site is easy to navigate with its wide range of hyperlinks to move from topic to topic and ability to communicate to others with the twitter, e-mail and share links. I personally like this site because it gives the followers the visuals, audio and video to report stories. This website can lean slightly to a liberal stand, but it does cover other perspectives and current events. I can’t really say if this is considered a biased website however.

Article: http://www.npr.org/2011/12/05/143154598/history-with-cain-may-pay-off-for-gingrich?wpisrc=nl_fix

After reading “Game Change” base on the 2012 elections; it was interesting to learn how each candidate the media affected. Well the blogs about Herman Cain definitely remind me of the blogs in the Huffington Post. The relationship between Obama and Clinton seem similar to the relationship to Cain and Newt Gingrich. Newt Gingrich spoke positively about Herman Cain’s departure from the 2012 elections and how his 9-9-9 plan was creditable whether we liked it or not. It sounds like these candidates support each other and that this relationship may suede voters who support Cain to follow Gingrich, such as Clinton voters transitioned to Obama.

RIGHTWING NEWS

This website would be my type of source for information. The website is full of hyperlinks to other blog sites, political adds, and the design is really structure to appeal to viewers who are very busy and like to get the point. The website has a lot of conservative emphasis in its information sharing, so I can quickly determine there is a bias. Not to mention the website is labeled “Rightwing”. Although I am more of a liberal type of person, I like this website.

Article: http://conservativedailynews.com/2011/12/ten-reasons-to-love-rick-perry/

This article reminds me of module eleven “election coverage continued”. This article speaks on ten reason to love Rick Perry. Obviously the media in this blog site support candidate Rick Perry because they are giving the readers reason to support him, along with ads, links, statistics that are all about the positive perspective of the presidential candidate. This site also provides ads and you tube tabs to obtain additional information for the subject matter.

Module 14 10 Election Things You Need to Know/ What did you learn that you valued the most?

1. Learn to identify the different types of bias and agenda’s that our media exposes.
2. Learn how to weed out the BS from the actual facts based on events being delivered by media.
3. Understand that media can expose politicians in both a negative way and positive way.
4. Understand that media can keep politicians liable on their objectives.
5. There is an agenda when it comes to politics. Pay attention to each politician and do not let the media influence you with their agendas. At the same time use the media for the fact that they have the power to keep politicians liable for their actions and obligations. Media will expose the character of politicians.
6. Being president involves many people who provide specific roles. It takes a successful team to address all of the important needs that the United States require out of the president.
7. “There is more to the story” Use the tools such as books, new media, etc. to get the details. Tweeter, bloggers, internet, mobile internet, television, radio, participation in events, etc can all contribute to society in terms of making a difference.
8. Herman Cain’s 9-9-9 plan is weak and does not help our citizens. The plan contradicts it-self and removes taxes from one area (federal) and creates taxes in another area (state).
9. Hillary Clinton is a very intelligent person who was overshadowed by another president (Obama) because of his charismatic delivery of information, youthfulness, and creativity to appeal to the people. They both however are people leaders I admire.
10. Pay attention to 2011; much of the important events take place prior to the actual elections. 2012 elections will be interesting.

Learning about types of bias and agendas that media deliver to the audience/viewers is what I value the most. Society relies on mass media to keep up with current events in which help people develop opinions and make important decisions that impact their daily life. Knowing that information can be shared with the agenda to influence or encourage people to think a certain way definitely prepares me as a viewer when obtaining information on daily events through such media channels.

Media surprised me in terms of how much of an impact they play for and against politicians. Media has definitely made its presence felt in current events; however politics is heavily affected by media. It was really interesting to learn how both media and politics work hand and hand for the benefit and appeal of voters.

Overall I feel that politics is not as complicated as I thought. Based on media, I never really trusted the information that was being delivered. Politics can be very interesting and I feel that this course encouraged me to look more into events and politicians. Accessing multiple media channels will give me a bigger look into politics and help me to see information from different perspectives. The more views on events, the better I can create an opinion about politicians and important decisions.

Module 13 - State of the News Media

I personally like Jon Stewart for his political humor and ability to keep the media on their toes regarding their agendas when reporting news. Based on Jon Stewarts success, Fox news shows their interest in defending themselves and addressing Jon Stewart’s opinions about media agenda. However after listening to the interview; it’s interesting how Fox news does not deny their agenda as being conservative bias. The interview was very heated but professional at the same time. Overall, the interview revealed Fox news attempting to bash Jon Stewart versus defending their media agenda. Fox news tries to put both Jon Stewart and MSNBC on blast for being liberal bias and setting themselves as equals to all other media agendas.

I believe that Jon Stewart appeals to the audience’s political opinions from a comical perspective. Like most U.S. citizens, Jon Stewart does have a political stand and it may show a form of influence, but he is nowhere close to comparison to Fox News in terms to political position in media. Fox news even confirms their conservative position in the interview by pointing out how Jon attacks Republicans and how unethical Comedy Central is.

Debates are very significant due to the fact that such debates give the viewers the opportunity to develop an opinion about each candidate through their performance. Debates allow us to see candidates at work, how knowledgeable, how confident, and how charismatic they are in terms of delivery and vision. I agree with Mrs. Bachmann’s campaign about the media elites attempting to manipulate the republican debates. It makes sense that liberal media elites would try to push for a republican candidate that would serve as no threat to the democratic competitor.

Rick Perry’s mistake is a common human error as explained in the article; however viewers use these types of events to develop an opinion about the candidate. Common human errors may hurt a candidate’s image for the time being; but over time and with additional exposures and events, candidate can make up their mistakes. Also media can play a major role by manipulating the audience and pointing out each candidate’s human error to serve an agenda. Rick Perry’s mistake was very significant in this case based on the highly viewed event.
